Getting Started

Online counselling has grown over the past years. It is convenient, and flexible...perfect for people who have issues which prevent them from going out, time restraints, and bespoke when it comes to method and cost.

After the free consultation, the first free session will be of the same format and standard as any other further sessions. What follows are explanations of how sessions will work, with each method. Please excuse that some parts are repeated, but I think that it is best to be clear about how each method works.

The consultation is usually by phone call, or video call, but can be by email or message if required. It involves a number of specific questions relating to demographics and the issues, and history, which need to be discussed. Also, any questions you may have at the time.

Individual video call:

This is the next best thing to face-to-face, for online. At the consultation we will decide together which software application, for webcam use, we will use for our sessions...then book in a day and time.

I will, on the day, call you by video call just before the arranged time. Please try to be ready about 5 minutes before at least, so as to settle in and begin the actual session on time. We will then start by catching up on what was previously discussed, either at the consultation or a previous session, and then move forward with the session and the specific therapy being used. The session will cover any outstanding, and new, issues....and content will depend upon your individual needs at the time. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and booking the next session, unless you already have a regular slot. If you do not have a regular booking, and still do not want to make one then, you can get back to me at a later date.

Individual phone:

The number I will be using will be either +4420 3289 1044 or +447498 638 464 (I will let you know before), and I am able to phone any landline and mobile in the UK, Ireland, and a number of other Countries. I will call you just before the scheduled time for the session. Please try to be ready about 5 minutes before at least, so that you can settle in and begin the session on time. We will then start by catching up on what was previously discussed, either at the consultation or a previous session, and then move forward with the session. The session will cover any oustanding, and new, issues...and the content will depend upon the individual needs at the time. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and booking the next session, unless you already have a regular slot. If you do not have a regular booking, and still do not want to make one then, you can get back to me at a later date.

Individual email:

Before our first session, to comply with the BACP's mandatory guidelines for online counselling, it is important for you to sign up to either www.hushmail.com or https://mail.protonmail.com for greater security. I will, on the day, email you just before the session is due to start. Please try to be ready at least 5 minutes before, so as to settle in and begin the session on time. We will then start by catching up on what was previously discussed, either at the consultation or a previous session, and then move forward with the session. Email counselling usually works where you pay for one email...you would send emails to me, and then I would reply with a full email in a couple of days with my total response to yours...this is a good method, and can be requested. However, my experience with my current Clients is that they prefer the more personal touch of real-time responses...the above mentioned email accounts are quicker because we will both be on the same platform, and they are encrypted at the same time for security. So, during our booked session we will email each other for that period of time. The session will cover any outstanding, and new, issues...and content will depend upon your individual needs at the time. Please wait each time for my reply to your email, before you send another one...this will prevent confusion. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and booking the next session, unless you already have a regular slot. If you do not have a regular booking, and still do not want to make one then, you can get back to me at a later date.

Individual instant message:

At the consultation stage we will discuss which software application you prefer to use, and then book in a day and time. I will, on the day, message you just before the session is due to start. Please try to be ready at least 5 minutes before, so as to settle in and begin the session on time. We will then start by catching up on what was previously discussed, either at the consultation or a previous session, and then move forward with the session. During our booked session we will message each other in real-time for that period of time. The session will cover any outstanding, and new, issues....and content will depend upon your individual needs at the time. Please wait each time for my reply to your message, before you send another one...this will prevent confusion. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and booking the next session, unless you already have a regular slot. If you do not have a regular booking, and still do not want to make one then, you can get back to me at a later date.

Individual text:

SMS text counselling is not one of the best methods, but I believe it is appropriate to give this option. The number, at present, to use will be the Service mobile +447498 638 464 ...this is a standard text number. Even though it is a standard number, it would not be cost-effective for yourself unless you have an unlimited text bundle, or similar. I will, on the day, text you just before the session is due to start. Please try to be ready at least 5 minutes before, so as to settle in and begin the session on time. We will then start by catching up on what was previously discussed, either at the consultation or a previous session, and then move forward with the session. During our booked session we will text each other in real-time for that period of time. The session will cover any outstanding, and new, issues....and content will depend upon your individual needs at the time. Please wait each time for my reply to your text, before you send another one...this will prevent confusion. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and booking the next session, unless you already have a regular slot. If you do not have a regular booking, and still do not want to make one then, you can get back to me at a later date.

Open talk:

This method is different to convential therapy, in that it is completely based on talking about anything you wish in a manner preferred by you. It is a way to express feelings in a less structured way, and entirely Client led....almost being like a chat, with someone who you know is listening. Plus, you do not have to do it alone so you can have someone else with you during the session who can take an active part if you wish. At the consultation you can choose video call or phone for your first session. I will call you just before the scheduled time for the session. Please try to be ready about 5 minutes before at least so that you can settle in and begin the session on time, and the same for anyone else who my be joining you if by video call...plus, by video call they can join in from a different location. We will proceed as you wish to, but please be aware that it is still the purpose of the session to help you in any way but just being more relaxed. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and booking the next session, unless you already have a regular slot. If you do not have a regular booking, and still do not want to make one then, you can get back to me at a later date.

Couples video call:

This is ideal in that you do not have to be in the same place for a session, which is good for long-distance relationships in particular. At the consultation we will decide together which software application, for webcam use, we will use for our sessions...then book in a day and time. I will, on the day, call you by video call just before the arranged time. Please try to be ready about 5 minutes before at least, especially if you are going to be calling from two different locations, so as to settle in and begin the actual session on time.

Family video call:

This, like couples therapy, is ideal in that you do not have to be in the same place for a session....getting all the immediate family members together for input, especially if they do not live in the same area, is beneficial to such an important part of life. At the consultation we will decide together which software application, for webcam use, we will use for our sessions...then book in a day and time. I will, on the day, call you by video call just before the arranged time. Please try to be ready about 5 minutes before at least, especially if you are going to be calling from different locations, so as to settle in and begin the actual session on time.

Mediation video call:

Mediation can be very stressful, and worrying, so by using this method both parties can feel more in control and safer. If it is required for something such as visitation arrangements, or even custody maters, it can help with better communication and alleviate problems of travelling and freeing up time.

Group video call:

At the end of our consultation, if it is decided that group therapy is the best way forward, we will discuss when the next relevant group video call session/room will be held....and book you in, or contact you later with one that comes available. There can be up to ten people in a video room, but there will probably only be up to seven normally. Please check out my Group Therapy sessions.  I will enter the video room roughly 5 minutes before the arranged time, and then members should try to turn up on time as best as they can. The session will progress with members talking about their issues, in relation to the group topic, and the other members can listen and interact in turn. I must make it very clear that every member of the group, without exception, must respect others in the group and there will be zero tolerance. Any member who does not abide by this will automatically be disconnected from the room, and will not be able to attend again. That member can talk to me privately about such events at a later time. Any member can leave at any time....this is why the first time is free, since it may not be suitable for you them. The session will end at the agreed time, and we will take just a few minutes leading up to the finish to discuss anything that may be required for the next session...and informing everyone when the next session is planned for.

For your information:

Please note that if you do not have your next session booked already, then sometimes it could be more difficult to book you in at a convenient time at a later date. If at the beginning of a session you fail to respond, I will wait 15 minutes for you to do so before I end contact at that point. If you do turn up late it will probably not be possible for time to run over to make up for that lost time. When someone is late for a group session, they can enter late but it will not be as beneficial for them. I appreciate that every day problems occur, and cancellations are probable, but if we work together to resolve any such problems then you will benefit from my help in the long run. Thank you.

NB: You can change the method used for our sessions at any point, for example that you may only be comfortable to use the phone at first and then video call later. However, even though you may be using the new method for the first time at a later date you will not get it free...everyone only has one free session which is the one following their consultation.

NB: It is important that you have regular sessions, and any deviation from routine may very well interupt any progress you make. However, it is entirely up to you how often you wish to have a session...you need to feel comfortable doing so, and able to. Nobody is under any obligation.

It is my aim to help as much as possible, however since I can not guarantee to be available at the exact moment a person needs help I can not be classed as an emergency contact. If you are in crisis then please contact the Samaritans, your GP or health care professional, or the appropriate emergency service. CALL 111.
